Remember when sharing music meant you sat by the radio with your cassette player and tried to hit the “record” button at just the right time. Mix tapes. I was born at the tail end of that era. But I heard you could sit around all day trying to make a good one.
I’m so glad things have changed in the area of audio and sound. To help me understand just how far sound systems have come, my sponsor Sonos sent me some of their products at no charge so we could experience music everywhere in our home. No need to wait around for our favorite song (which always got interrupted by the DJ, right?).
Sonos is a wireless Hi-Fi system that gives you the ability to:
- Stream your entire music library, music services, and radio stations
- Control wirelessly, easy to set up music players
- Start with one music player, expand throughout your house (connect all speakers wirelessly with Sonos Bridge)
- Versatile enough to put anywhere — horizontal or vertical
The sound quality of our Sonos Play:3 speakers is crisp and clear. Even though Play3 speakers are about the size of a loaf of bread (perfect for fitting anywhere unobtrusively!), they deliver great volume and sound quality!
Add to that… the ability to access just about all the music in the world. Literally. Besides any music on my computer, iPad or hubby’s computer, I now have access to thousands of radio stations and online music services. All without needing to go to the actual device that houses the music. As our family never did invest in a whole lot of CDs, this has amplified our music selection easily 10x over! (Spotify? Songza? Who knew how great these could be!?).
My favorite feature of Sonos – I can use my mobile device to “find” my music. If I uploaded a CD to my computer downstairs, but I’m upstairs, I access it with the Sonos Controller app. Even if the computer is off!
Oh, no wait, this is my favorite feature: If our upstairs Sonos speaker is playing too loudly for the kids’ naps, but I’m downstairs, I can control the sound or music choice from downstairs!!!
No. I changed my mind. THIS is really the best feature: If hubby is upstairs and wants to listen to the stirring tones of Les Miserables, and I’m downstairs and our son wants to trot around to his cowboy music… the two speakers can play different songs at the same time!!
My biggest “aha!” moment using Sonos was how I started to feel like we have a daily soundtrack for life. Music became a seamless part of our routine, instead of a chore to find CDs, keep them playing, switch them out, etc. I set up playlists, choosing music for breakfast time, playtime, quiet time, cleanup time, relaxing time… I can tailor my playlist to the tasks at hand. I can add songs to the playlist so everybody gets a turn and their music is already waiting in the lineup to play.
Singing :: and it’s soooo easy to skip songs I dislike! ::
I can imagine Sonos would be awesome for families with teenagers. Nobody has to “fight” over who’s listening to what if you had a couple speakers. Family and music would be a cohesive mix, and using the Sonos could actually bring the family together to share playlists, find ways to enjoy music together, and unplug without staring at the television.
Right now, we enjoy Sonos speakers in our kitchen and bedroom. But they are easy to unplug and move around the house (reconnecting in seconds with the Bridge!). We’ve already seen how music classes changed our family by giving us the confidence to sing anything, anytime… now we’re listening to music anytime and anywhere in our house thanks to the Sonos system!
Thanks to Sonos for providing products to create this post and spread the message of music everywhere! All opinions are 100% my own.

The Sonos Play:3 is a great product. We have one in our home as well. If your pockets are deep enough you could also go for the Play:5. Nothing bad about the Play:3 though. The technology for selecting music as you describe it is similar. The biggest difference is that the bass of the Play:5 is deeper.
