Babyproofing … All over again!

We’d just gotten used to having no baby gate at the top of the stairs. Not worrying about sharp edges. And not being overly concerned about outlets.

Along came baby #2. And we still lived in relative comfort. Because they don’t move around much. At first.

But now? Now we’re babyproofing all over again! While I think it’s always important to babyproof, I’m thinking it’s even MORE important with two or more kids.

Why? Simply because attention is divided. Before, I had two eyes focused on what my oldest was doing, and could steer him away from a hard table corner or electrical wires. Now I am getting whiplash trying to keep an eyeball on both boys!

And that little guy’s a fast one!

If you’re babyproofing for the first time, here’s a few areas to keep in mind:

Hardware mounted baby gates at the top of the stairs. Obviously. But perhaps also a gate at the bottom of the stairs too. Our one year old can already crawl up stairs, but would certainly fall if he tried to go back down.

Window blinds. If you have corded blinds I urge you to get a cord winder!

Table corners. The unfortunate thing about tables is they always seem to be the exact height of any child who walks by! Protect them with a corner guard!

Finger guards. We didn’t have these for our youngest because really, who was around to shut a door on him? Nobody. But with two, the oldest is always trying to shut the door on his brother while the little one’s fingers are exploring that inviting crack near the hinge. Great! It’s easy to slip over the hinge, and quick to remove if we want to shut the door all the way. I just hang it on the door handle until we’re ready to use it again.

Outlet plugs. It’s hard wired into every child to want to stick things into electrical outlets. I wonder what kids did before electricity?
