By age five, most kids are already “people who have everything” when it comes to gift-giving.
We try our best to keep toys and “stuff” simple – it has to fit inside containers we currently own, haha. But… birthdays and Christmas still happen. We’ve been giving the boys “experience” gifts since our oldest’s first birthday – trips to New York City, local fun spots, etc. This year, in honor of his shark birthday party theme, we took a family trip to a local aquarium where he could see (and pet!) sharks, among other aquatic fascinations.
Still… there’s always people who want to give a traditional unwrap-it gift, and there are plenty of great choices for birthday gift ideas that are exciting, useful, and don’t add to the “stuff” factor. Here’s a few of our latest favorite birthday gift ideas for boys ages 3-7! (Truthfully, boys and girls will love these items, but I just speak from my experience having boys!).
This is a sponsored post and items were sent for my review. All opinions are my own.
Stephen Joseph Gifts
Especially perfect for a themed present or when children have latched on to a favorite animal or character, Stephen Joseph gifts offer whimsically designed practical everyday items for kids – rain gear, travel gear, everyday essentials like backpacks, lunch boxes, plates – even fashion accessories. Kids love to practical gifts when they are packaged up with the charming detail and delight in these Stephen Joseph designs. I was excited to find an entire line of shark themed gifts to match our son’s party theme. But there’s dozens of themes to choose from: ballet, cupcakes, tons of animals, sports, robots…
Use their designs and products to add to your child’s current interest, boost a child’s room decor, or celebrate at a party (we used the shark penny pinchers (no longer sold) as party favors and treats for his friends).
Each item is crafted with sturdy materials and reinforced stitching to hold up to kid usage. My favorite item was the wallet – our five year old is so proud of his big-boy wallet that he can carry around his money in for shopping (he loves to keep the money IN the wallet instead of spend it – good boy!). Stephen Joseph Gifts range from $2-25.
Kinderglo Portable Night Lights
Oh we so love our Kinderglo portable night lights. You’ve heard me mention them several times already on this site. And why? Because they are simply that awesome. Their animal shapes amuse, and the soft glow comforts my boys at night. I love how they are unobtrusive with no noises or flashing. They auto-shut off after thirty minutes, so you don’t waste their power. Even if you kept them on continuously, they have a rechargeable battery and a handy wall charging station.
The moose is our oldest Kinderglo (4 years!) and still glowing! They are perfect for camping, sleepovers, through-the-night road trips. Simply put, our family loves these little lights! Kinderglo night lights are $25 each.
Safari LTD. Figurines
I’ve already shared our shark cake decorations with the Safari Ltd. hand-painted animal figurines. But I just wanted to mention that they make great gifts as well. As far as toys go, yes there are lots of little pieces, but I can think of countless times I spy my kids creating elaborately detailed stories and scenes in their play using their Safari Ltd. sets! They are fantastic for fostering imagination and storytelling! They are aptly called the Toys that Teach!
You can buy TOOBS of assorted animals, or a larger single animal. Great for kids who enjoy collecting, or have a particular interest – and they aren’t limited to animals. You’ll find people, ancient civilizations, United States monuments, trains, tools, and more sets. That’s why I love them for party decor, because almost any theme you could think of, Safari Ltd. has a figurine set to match! Their adorable Good Luck Minis are perfect for cupcakes, games, or prizes too! Safari Ltd. figurines range from $4-12 each (multi-packs are more).
Silikids Silimaps – United States Placemats
I have discovered the saving grace of placemats with my boys this year. Messy eaters, both of them, lately! But… Silikids to the rescue! These Silimaps, flexible, fold-up placemats, tend to “grip” the table slightly so they can’t easily slide them around and knock plates and things onto the ground. They clean up and stash away like a breeze, so we can throw them in the diaper bag for trips and dinners out. And let’s not forget the learning opportunity here – the clearly printed United States map keeps my kids entertained. It helps that we are also studying US geography and the states and capitals right now in our homeschooling, but I’d recommend it for any youngster to start learning the locations and shapes of the states. I give them bowls of blueberries or cereal pieces and call out names of states, and my oldest will put the piece onto the correct state. When he’s out of blueberries, he names the state a blueberry is on before eating it. Keeps them busy and my table clean – that’s a win-win!
Silimaps retail for $14.95 each.
There you have it – so many great birthday gift ideas that won’t just sit around, and will delight and inspire children in their life and play!
