It’s not just emotional support from family, friends, and society that is necessary when breastfeeding. Trust me, those days and nights when you’re alone with your baby nursing, you’ll need some real physical support.
I had seriously painful breastfeeding for over 12 weeks until I finally found my most-awesome lactation specialist (please, hunt for one if you are struggling!). During that time, I tried nearly every brand and type of product I could think of to ease the pain and make life bearable.
Lansinoh makes some great products for nursing moms. They carry a full line of breastfeeding products. Here are four typical items you’ll need while breastfeeding:
Breast Milk Storage Bags – These bags have a double zipper seal and are the strongest bags available. The food-grade plastic is BPA free. Using storage bags is a great way to keep milk in the freezer, as it will lay flat and thaw quickly! These are not the kind that hang off the flange of your pump, but you could still pump into them if you hold the bag yourself. (ARV $4.99).
Disposable Nursing Pads – I didn’t know about cloth nursing pads when I started out (hey, I was barely into cloth diapers at the time), so I went through a couple boxes of these types of nursing pads. They work fantastically to absorb milk leakage. I see they have a new design in the contouring, and TWO adhesive strips – I think that is important to prefent shifting and friction. (ARV $10.89 per 60-pack)
HPA Lanolin – As it turns out, I had some kind of reaction to lanolin, so I had to use a non-lanolin soothing balm. But for the rest of you, lanolin is fantastic for soothing and healing crack, dry, sore nipples. It is the only topical nipple cream endorsed in the US by La Leche League International – wow, that is saying something, right? Made from the world’s purest lanolin, you do not have to remove this balm prior to breastfeeding. (ARV $9.45).
Soothies Gel Pads – Yes, that’s right – this brand has been acquired by Lansinoh, and they continue to make the same great moist wound healing environment to soothe and protect sore nipples. I used these a LOT the first few weeks. Benefits – not only is this a non-messy way to get relief, but they also protect you from bra friction! These pads will absorb leaking breastmilk up to a point, and they can even be cut to size! You do need to gently clean residue prior to breastfeeding. My only regret is that since they only last about 72 hours, it can get a bit expensive! (ARV $9.60)
