The old way: I wake to a gray morning, blindly pass my hand over my bedside table, knock the thermometer onto the floor (or realize I left it on the bathroom counter), get the cap off and shove it in my mouth. But I fall asleep while it’s taking my temp and the reading says 84.1 degrees. I think. My eyes are so gritty I can’t tell. I take the temp again, seems like it’s high nineties, so I toss the thermometer on the table and fall asleep. I’m not a morning person.
An hour or so later, I get up, rub my eyes, look at the paper chart on my dresser and try to remember what temperature I had. Was it 98.7 or 97.8? Because in fertility monitoring those are vastly different. Or was that yesterday and I forgot to take my temp this morning altogether? I stare bleakly at the line wavering across my chart, several missing days here and there.
The month I did manage to get all the temps on the chart, I could not make heads or tails of the patternless trail dotting across the grid. No wonder it took us fourteen months to get pregnant the first time!
I hate natural family planning. I mean, I’d rather do things the natural way, without hormones, pills, etc. But it is huge pain. For me at least. Kudos if you’ve got a system that works for you. I can’t believe I haven’t made an Excel spreadsheet for this already, but… that seems a little excessive, even for me!
The new way: Seven AM. Beep. Beep-beep. Beep-beep-beep. Reach, grab Lady-Comp Baby from the table. Stick wand into mouth. Within ten seconds, blee-da-deep! My temp is taken. Put machine back on table. Fall asleep.
When I wake up there is nothing to remember. Nothing to chart. Nothing to calculate. I press a button. Oh, I see I’m on day ten of my cycle. Looks like I am potentially fertile today. Possibility of having a boy if we attempt is high. Note to self.
Natural family planning, you have just been digitized!
What can I say? I’m attracted to really smart gadgets (and my hubby!). It’s actually fun to see what my Lady-Comp Baby tells me each day. (note: Lady-Comp is for planning not to get pregnant, but Lady-Comp Baby has additional programming to aid in achieving pregnancy).
Lady-Comp Baby tracks basal body temperatures and uses an algorithm plus stored cycle information to determine optimal fertility. Prompts are given to input cycle days and attempts at conception. The more you input cycle information the smarter the machine grows! It actually learns your personal cycle!
The niftiest prompt is the fertile day forecast. A boy icon appears on the two days where conceiving a boy is likely, a boy and girl appears on peak fertility day, and a girl appears on the two days a girl is likely.
And that’s not all! Throw away those pee sticks. Lady-Comp Baby’s internal pregnancy test signals possible pregnancy after 5 days, probable pregnancy after 15 days, and confirmed pregnancy after 18 days.
Yes, all one machine! No paperwork.
The part I am impressed with is that after four months of tracking, if you haven’t achieved conception, you can send the company your machine and they will extract and print your records. This complete database is extremely helpful to bring to your fertility doctor because the Lady-Comp Baby also recognizes a Corpus Luteum Deficiency and other aspects of your cycle. This information is valuable to your doctor for treating certain infertility problems.
Prior to trying to get pregnant, I would never have considered natural family planning, because I knew I would mess up my records somewhere along the way. Now, I would feel confident using Lady-Comp Baby both trying and NOT trying to get pregnant. (Lucky for me, I get to test it out when I AM trying! ha!).
Lady-Comp Baby is available online for about $700. I know this seems very expensive, but when you consider all the money I spent on ovulation test kits, pregnancy tests, I bet I’d already spent half that amount. Plus, if it helps you save money from having to see fertility specialists, it is totally worth it. Add to that, the Lady-Comp Baby will last you many many years, making this a worthwhile investment over time!
We’re confident that using this natural family planning tool, conception won’t take so long this time around. The Lady-Comp Baby will help us keep better records. I’m going to write an update on my extended usage of Lady-Comp Baby in a few months. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll have some really exciting news for you by then!
