Quick Kids’ Snacks – Morning Munch Recipe

I’ve been taking the boys to a weekly homeschool class since September. Our Classical Conversations group meets each Thursday, and recently, I became a substitute tutor, so some mornings, I have to be there at 8 a.m.

Now, I realize that for many moms, this is really not a big deal, but as I have my first school-aged child in the house, we’re not used to being dressed, fed, and out the door at 7:30! Especially not with my slow eaters who could spend a leisurely forty-five minutes eating a baby bowl of cereal. I found myself needing a quick kids’ snack the boys could take in the car for breakfast.

After much trial and error (egg sandwiches and yogurt squeeze sticks are just not for 2.5 year olds in the car!), I came up with this quick kids’ snack mix blend. I think you moms who also hit the road with kids in the morning will love.

I call it my Morning Munch Mix Recipe! The boys love it. And I love it. And we get to class on time! Not only is it a fast recipe to throw together, but you can make it ahead of time, and store it for a day or two. Here’s the recipe:

Quick Breakfast Snack Mix – Morning Munch Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 box Horizon Snack Crackers
  • 1 box Horizon Graham Crackers
  • 2 cups freeze-dried fruit (for extra crunchiness)
  • 1 cup nuts (I used almonds, but mixed are fine - whatever your kids like)

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients together and toss lightly.
  2. Scoop into bags or containers that seal tightly, so the crackers don't go stale and the fruit doesn't harden.
  3. Serve within 2 days for freshest taste and texture.

What’s great about this breakfast snack is it has something crunchy, something fruity, and something hearty. I encourage my family to live a healthy lifestyle, and one of my big things with that is to always include protein at breakfast. So that’s why I added in the Horizon cheese or peanut butter sandwich crackers, plus the handful of nuts. A bit of protein first thing gives them more to “go” on for the morning in class.

My boys usually wash their Morning Munch Mix down with a Horizon Milk Box when we’re on the go – milk boxes are a special “travel treat” in our house, and the boys look forward to them. This snack mix is also perfect for any time of day, but I like that the fruits added give it more of a breakfast taste, and the snack grahams add a bit of sweetness that most of us crave in the mornings (I know I do!).
