I love a Snow Day!

Waking to find my husband still asleep next to me, and the light all watery gray through the shades could only mean… SNOW DAY! (Because hubby never over sleeps!)

The chortles from the baby’s nest beside our bed as he rediscovered his fingers. I listen, savoring every little snort and giggle as he awakens to his world.

Then the light pounding of little feet down the hall, the tugging of bedspreads as he clambers over a white mountain of knees and sheets, to dig a hole between us and lay down for a three second snuggle before popping up again and reaching over me to shout Good Morning to his baby brother.

And we’re up.

Downstairs, coffee’s on, make mine regular! My second day of quilting class for me and writing lessons for my nephew is suddenly cancelled, and the day takes on a fresh shape. I look forward to a day cozied up inside, organizing and mothering cold hands and cheeks in from the snow.

Waffles steam and pile up on plates, melting butter and syrup sweet into square pools. I savor the looks of satisfaction on boy and husband’s faces as they cut through stacks of sweetness. And smile, stashing future breakfast into the freezer. Breakfast leftovers are the best kind.

Daddy and son are shoveling, clearing, packing, sledding. He, seeming bigger in snow suit and boots, clambers over a white mountain of snow and ice, to dig a hole and lay down, then pop up again to shout I Did It to his mother at the door with the video camera.

The gray and white day slants away from us too soon. Piles of coats and pools of melted snow give way to hot chocolate around the table. Together. More sweetness.

Then we become a quiet napping house, lying warm beside my little one, under the same mountain of sheets, we snuggle through the twilight until dinner. Piping hot Chicken Crock Pie and fresh buttery biscuits, because this is what a snow day with a teacher-husband allows me to do: cook without distraction!

Our son searches through his bowl and, happening upon a yellow kernel exclaims There’s Jimmy Crack Corn in here!

We laugh loud, and raise pleased-parent eyebrows at each other across the table. Then it’s rush to get church clothes on because it is Prayer Meeting night. And we’re out the door, driving across snow and under the moon.

And I think I love Snow Days more now than when I was a kid.

How does a snow day change your routine?

I love it, Julie! We never have waffles left over to freeze... no matter how many we make. Would you please share your crock pot recipe on your blog? I'd love to Pin it and try it out some time. It is 3 degrees here and was actually a few degrees warmer a couple of hours ago. We usually walk to school, but we're going to drive this morning. The car reported 'ice' instead of a temperature... that is once I was able to unlock the doors and get in. Only one auto-unlock door actually unlocked. The doors themselves weren't frozen, the sliding lock was.
