Tot Explorations: Go Make a Kite!

I love getting into crafts with my toddler! We're able to do more now that he's older and it just gets more and more exciting.

This week, we made a kite - it was from a kite given to him at Sunday School, and we finally had time and a nice day to make it, and go outside and try it. I wanted to share the steps with you because it's really quite simple. Materials:

  • Cardstock
  • Stickers, Crayons
  • Hole Punch
  • Yarn/String
  • Crepe streamers
  • Stapler

The kite kit was a Noah's Art shape and theme, but you could really do any shape/theme!

  • Cut out a kite shape from sturdy cardstock. Probably any shape would work for this kind of kite - ours was Noah's Ark to fit the party theme.
  • Punch two holes at the top.
  • Tie yarn/string throught the holes to pull the kite.
  • Decorate the kite with stickers or coloring.
  • Staple on a few lengths of streamers. (We put stickers/decor on these too!)

Now you're ready to go! Run around the yard for some easy kite flying fun... and chances are, you'll never get caught by the Kite-Eating Tree!

Whose going to go fly a kite this week!? Have any more kite-making tips? This was a real hit with my son and we'll likely do it again soon!

  1. What a great craft! I spent some of my childhood on the Oregon coast, and I'll never forget trying to fly my Where's Waldo kite on the beach with my dad - it was so windy that we never stood a chance getting it up in the air, but it was still fun to try! LOL!

  3. Looks like he had fun with this. Last year we made a similar kite. Instead of cutting a shape out of cardstock we used a paper plate with a bear head on it...it was for a teddy bear picnic. It is so simple, but the little ones seem to love it.
