I am one of those odd people that find going the dentist a refreshing and exciting appointment every six months. I think this is why my own kids love the dentist. But for many kids, dental visits and oral hygiene habits are a struggle. So today I’ve partnered with some great brands to share some fun ways to get kids’ teeth clean. So they can begin to view the dentist as a fun place, and not a torture chamber!

Fun ways to get kids’ teeth clean
1. Get kids excited about their teeth!
We all started out great when our babies got that first tooth, right? After the succession of nineteen more baby teeth – the novelty wore off. So by the time kids have their first dentist visit (probably around age 2-3 although some recommend going in much earlier), having a doctor stare into their mouth with scary-looking instruments is… well, overwhelming. So, make a big deal about teeth for kids as they grow.
Start a big, happy conversation about kids’ teeth, by reading lots of books about teeth and the dentist. I love our Usborne board book How to Brush Your Teeth with Snappy Croc for preschoolers. Fun and rhythmic with lots of onomatopoeia sounds, it gives kids a fun view of toothbrushing and introduces them to this important daily routine! When kids start losing baby teeth, read Throw Your Tooth on the Roof, which shares cultural tales of what kids do with their teeth after they fall out! Reading is all part of starting a positive attitude towards teeth and oral hygiene. Check out these books:

2. Use a toothbrush timer and coach them along
Use a toothbrush timer or brushng coach to teach kids the steps needed to brush teeth correctly.

3. Choose a great toothpaste
We’ve been enjoying Attitude Little Leaves, a fluoride-free, plant- and mineral-based toothpaste. Here’s a few other reasons we choose this brand:
- EWG VERIFIED: Free from artificial dyes and sweeteners.
- NATURALLY DERIVED FORMULA: Made with 99% natural origin ingredients.
- FLUORIDE-FREE: Made without SLES and enriched with green tea leaf extract.
4. Finish with fun flossers
My oldest’s first dentist visit as a toddler revealed four cavities! Yikes! All his cavities were between the teeth, proving flossing is essential for even little ones! Using kids ‘flossers makes flossing fun with their animal-shapedflossers in neon colors.
Since our smiles influence our self-confidence (google that – lots of articles!), and poor oral hygiene is linked to other health conditions, it’s so important to start kids early with good dental habits! Getting kids to take care of their teeth requires patience, intentional teaching, and a little bit of fun! Create a routine that reminds kids to brush, set them up with the right tools, and help kids care for their teeth in an exciting and positive way.
