How I will spend Mother’s Day

On Sunday I will…

Wake to my toddler hopping in the bed with me, telling me it’s “wake-up time!”

Reach for my ten-month-old doing his wriggly “Superman” pose which means, “pick me up, Mommy!”

Breath in the dizzy smell of lilacs brought to me by a boy barefoot in the grass and spring sunshine. Breath in the moment he says, “I love you, Mommy,” and never let that go.

Tuck shirts into pants, socks into shoes, Cheerios into little bird-opened baby mouth.

Wonder that I can’t even remember when I wasn’t a mother…what were mornings like back then? And what does coffee taste like hot?

Gather bags, Bibles, and babies and head out to church… Send my toddler off to learn about Jesus and love hearing him shout “Mommy! and come running when I pick him up again.

I will…

Have lunch with my mother and watch her play with my children. Ask how she managed as a mom when she was my age with three little ones… How did she keep our house so clean and make dinner every night and not go crazy!

Listen to her tell me how she kept it simple and didn’t run around here and there every day. How she didn’t have email, and Facebook, and Twitter to check. How she did her sewing crafts while we played next to her.

And I will live a day just like she did, because this Sunday, I will turn off the computer, push aside the mouse, drop my iPhone in a deep purse pocket.

I will keep it simple. Not be distracted. Watch every facial expression as my children talk and babble. I will not say, “Just a minute,” or “Let me take a picture so I can share that on Facebook!”

This Sunday… I will spend a day focused fully on mothering and motherhood. On being a mom. On appreciating  my own mom. On not having to “share” every moment on the Internet. On pondering some moments only in my heart.

How will you spend Mother’s Day?

Was it delightful? We are planning my mother's day for this weekend. We knew last weekend would be too busy.

I did not realize how truly amazing a mom my own mother was until I had kids and saw how tough it was. Now I realize she was what I call a high level mom. I'll get there some day.

I will actually be spending the day with my son's grandparents visiting our state capital! I will try my best not to use social media but I'll probably still take pictures with my phone!
