It's been about two months, and I'm finally ready to write about "that time we took the binky away." Which is how hubby and I remember that very difficult and sleepless 6 weeks or so!
Yes, we decided when our son turned two, we would dispense with the binky. I was nervous. I kept telling myself it would be okay because he only used the binky for sleeping, and was fine without it the rest of the day.
We talked about it with our son for weeks... how he was a big boy. He didn't need the binky. Binkies are for little babies... oh and he bobbed his little blonde head, "yes, yes, yes, Mommy."
Then. One night, we had him gather up all his binkies and put them in a bag. (It's still in my bathroom drawer - who is more attached!?). With extra rocking and singing and loving, we put him to bed.
The crying ensued. And the next night. And the third night, he was fine. Phew - we breathed a sigh of relief as for three or four days, he went to sleep with nary a fuss.
Then. It was like he'd been waiting for us to bring the binkies back and when he realized that wasn't happening, a full-scale meltdown began. We began about 3-4 weeks of complete sobbing whenever I put him down for a nap or bedtime. It was heart-wrenching because it wasn't angry or defiant sobbing, it was pure baby-sadness sobbing. He never asked for his binky. But, unless he was teething (we wondered but to date NO new teeth have appeared), I am pretty sure the lack of a binky was the issue.
One thing we tried was giving him a transitional object - we had received an adorable sleeping frog plushie from miYim Simply Organic toys, at just the perfect time! We talked about how Froggie slept without a binky and so could he!
I don't know if our son was impressed by that or not. But one thing's for sure, he does love his little animals, and he welcomed Froggie into the herd with love. (And possibly a few nibbles on Froggie's leg!).
We finally saw the hystrionics at bedtime die down. We'll never know what made our son stop crying for his binky. Probably just time. Still, we were happy to have little Froggie to bridge the gap.

How did you get your child to give up their binky?
Thanks to miYim Simply Organic for sending an item for review and offering a giveaway! All opinions are my own and 100% honest!

Fun reading the strings. My son was so attached to his pacifier that it started to become a real problem. We could not go anywhere without making sure that we had a pacifier in hand. My friend absolutely raved about the bye bye binky method so we decided to give it a try (she found it at bye-bye-binky.com ). All I can say is WOW, worked beautifully for my son with no tantrums, not even one! Super easy and four days later he had no interest in his binky. We really were amazed… highly recommended… Amber

My daughter is 2 years and 3 months...we are trying to take the pacifier away, but it isn't going that well. We waited too long and now she can get out of her crib! It is not going well.

I remember my mother throwing my sisters binkie out the window in the car. (This was 30 years ago). She told her that she was no longer a baby and she didn't need it any longer. She was so upset by this. It took several weeks for her to finally be ok without it.

My daughter only took a pacifier for about the first two months after she was born and then discovered her thumb and never looked back at the pacifier. I'm hoping she will grow out of the thumb sucking so I don't have to try to wean her off of it!

Unfortunately my son is attached to my boobs 🙂 I would love to help him become attached to a lovey or a little stuffed animal. Don't get me wrong, I cherish our time together. But soon we'll be trying for baby #2.

My 11 month old daughter never had a binky. You may think this is a good thing, but she still does not sleep through the night. She gets up 3 -4 times a night. Maybe she would have done better with a pacifier.

My younger two never used a pacifier but my oldest did. It always to be the same one, not even a new one of the exact same kind would do because he recognized the roughness of the old one. We eventually made a little hole in it & he realized it was broken & no new one would do.

When my son was an infant my mother in law bought him his first pacifier, I tossed it. She bought another one, I tossed it. After a dozen or so pacifiers, she got the hint and he never missed it. 🙂

My son is 17 months old and I'm dreading taking away his binky for naps and night time. I don't think it would bother him any other time and it took him forever to be a good sleeper anyways it just seems like we'd be putting ourselves back to the time it took him hours to fall asleep, ugh!

Wow... we have started to try to get rid of the Binkie and its fine during the day but at night my daughter keeps waking up and won't go back to sleep without it. We've given up for now but we're going to make a serious push for it again this summer since we're both teachers... any advice would be great.

We are working hard at weaning our daughter off of her pacifier. She was doing pretty good until our son was born and now she sees him with it and all of a sudden we are back where we started. We are doing it little by little and hopefully it won't take too long before she decides she really doesn't need it anymore.

I told my daughter the passy fairy took her passy's to the babies who needed them. She bought it and it was never an issue after that. 🙂

Fortunately, my daughter never liked the pacifier. She was more a thumb sucker and after we started taking the thumb out of her mouth as she slept, she just stopped. I'm not sure when it exactly happened.

I would love to win this for my baby niece who really could use some comfort! She's not even 2 yet and has been in and out of the doctor's and hospital so many times. She has such a weak immune system. Thanks for the chance to win!

My daughter never really took to a pacifier, we tried to give it to her but she just spit it out. She never would take it. I am kind of glad that she never took a pacifier so I would not to worry about weening her off of it.

My friend also has a child who just turned 2 and she is looking to get rid of the pacifier. I told her to say they would give them to her baby cousin who is due soon, but now I see it's more difficult than that.

I am really lucky that neither of my boys liked the pacifier or bottles. Of course, when they cried I had to figure out other ways to calm them, but I think in the end it makes it easier. I don't have to break them of anything and they learned early on how to comfort themselves. Usually it does involve hugs from Mommy. We also used to switch out their toys because a friend of mine's son loved this one toy and they lost it and he was a wreck!

Only 2 of my 5 sons took a paci. The first was surprisingly easy to take away. The second, not so much! It took a week of hard bedtimes but he finally got better. Like with your son, having a special stuffed animal seemed to help.

We never had a binky problem with our daughter. Our Dr suggested trying one, but she never took to it. We have a new baby coming very soon, and hopefully she will be just as good. Thank you for the lovely giveaway!

With my daughter the great trauma was taking her bottle away. What I didn't anticipate was that she saw me put it "up high" in a cupboard and went to great lengths to climb up after it later when my back was turned. Thankfully she wasn't hurt, but it gave me a good scare to see her making her way up there!

I was very fortunate in that my kids never took to a binky and although they slept with a blanket, it wasn't something I ever let them use outside of their bed so I never had to deal with taking something soothing away.

We're expecting our first this fall and we've been debating a bunch of different parenting topics- including the nuk (what I call them, lol) and whether we even want to give our baby one so then we wouldn't have to deal with taking it away. Thanks for the giveaway.

I love the animals all lined up in his crib. P will not have ANY in this. For awhile he had this little puppy that we had to tuck in next to him, but even puppy gets thrown out now.
I never had binky issues so nothing to say there! 🙂

Out of three kids, only one is a thumb sucker. Since she only does it when tired I'm hoping it won't be an issue when she gets "too old" for it. It's super cute though!

Ahhh yes the binky. We're right at that point where I'm trying to decide what to do. We had this small period when my daughter was about 12 months old that she would throw her pacifier back in the crib every time she got up from a nap. But, then she started getting her molars in and the the pacifier was the only thing that seemed to help. I am almost loathe to give it up before the other two molar sets come in. 🙁 But I do think we need to start insisting on it being only a bed time thing. She will be 2 at the end of July and I'm tired to taking pictures of her with a binky in her mouth! But she LOVES her binky. She talks about it, asks for it, runs to her room to find it. She is very very stubborn so I know it going to be a total battle of the wills. I'm trying to get up the gumption to do it. Wish me luck!

My eldest daughter used her Nuk for a very long time, until she was 4. Although she only used it for sleeping, it was time to go. We told her the "Nuk Fairy" needed her Nuk's and would exchange them for a very special gift. We put the Nuk's in a box and in their place she received a Barbie Doll. She must of been ready to let them go because she handled it fine.

We managed to get dd to give up her paci's simply becasue she kept biting holes in all of them and we stopped buying them! I don't remember her crying or throwing fits though. I do know she stopped going to sleep by herself though....an it continues today! We are finally at the point where we can get her to lay down in the living room with us in the room and she will fall asleep. She has to have someone close by and prefers to have a body next to her to fall asleep. Oh funny story - dh and her were watching something or reading something (don't remember which) and there was a kid going to sleep in his own bed by himself. She asked dh "Why don't they sleep with their mommy and daddy?", like it was the only way to sleep! Ihave a feeling she will still be in bed with us at 10! LOL

We are currently working on getting rid of the pacifier as well. She only uses it to sleep but we have been trying to talk to her to get her to get rid of it, but that hasn't worked. Once we come back from vacation in a couple of weeks, I will try the cold turkey method.

We don't have a binky issues, we have a nursing to sleep issue and might have to wean soon. We'll have to try a replacement or just hope it goes well! We do have the yellow frog from miYim and love it! They are so soft and very nice that's organic too!

Well, out of my 2 kids (so far) neither have been into a pacifier. We tried with both of them though. With my daughter she would take her tiny little thumb and wedge it in behind the pacifier and pop it out and then happily suck on her thumb... and she's 6 and still sucks it when she goes to sleep at night. I would have rather had the pacifier because them we could have taken it away. There's no taking away thumbs, LOL! My son didn't really suck anything and then after a while he found his blankie and sucks on that. Ew, gross. Blankie needs a bath often. We'll see what the new baby does but so far we have a no binkie track record here.

It's difficult to take a pacifier away from a child but it's far easier than the thumb! My four year old grandson still relies on his thumb when he's tired and can't seem to give it up, even though his dentist has suggested this to him.

My son still sucks his thumb at three and wish it would have been a binky. The thumb is going to be a hard habit to break. We love organic toys especially ones they sleep with. We do not have any but know my daughter would love the Baby Andi Plush Hippo.

Baby C used to just sleep with her paci. But she had a really bad teething bout and the only thing that helped to soothe her was warm hugs and a paci. Now I can't get rid of it. She'll even double up. LOL! We'll figure it out.

My older son got rid of his own binky after about 9 months maybe a little older and my younger one wouldn't ever take a binky and we tried EVERY brand! Guess we were kinda lucky? The younger one always wanted to suck on a pinky finger lol! Baby boy is adorable sleeping with his new friends <3

My daughter gave up her binkies when she was 3 because I was expecting my third and we worked up to it by saying that we needed to give them to the new baby and the nuk fairy was going to come and pick them up when she was ready and leave her something as a reward. It did work. She did great. For the last year of her paci use, it was only when she was overtired and nap/bed. She was not allowed to walk around with them and she didn't ask for them any other time, so it wasn't too bad. She packed them up and left them and was rewarded with a note and a great prize! She didn't even care when her new baby brother had his!

My daughter has a doll that my granddaughter is attached to. It is pitiful looking. They have had to sew the arm on a few times. The doll is no longer white like it was...it is just a dreadful looking doll. She even searched and searched until she found a new one, same exact doll but...it isn't working. I guess this is something like taking away a Binky. It is so very difficult.

We took my grandson's paci away around 13 months old. He cried for a few nights when he was looking for it and couldn't find it, but it wasn't extreme and we didn't even need to go in his room to calm him down. It was a very easy transition and I think doing it earlier than later makes it easier on the child before they really form a big attachment to the paci.

With my son we got rid of his pacifier at 8 months, but my girls we waited until they were 12-13 months. It was easier with my son being a younger age, but with each kid I feel that I just want to keep them a baby a little bit longer! 🙂 My 4th is due in June and we aren't planning on any more kids, so who knows when we'll take this one's binky away!

We did this cold turkey with our 2 year old and she never asked about it or cried. I was very surprised... But she did seem a little melancholy for a week or so.

Getting rid of the binky is the worst. We waited till she was a bit over 3 and we went cold turkey....it was hard, but she made it through.

This is a great gift for new parents who want to keep things that come in contact with their baby as organic as possible. I've sent several of these sets along with other miYim products to friends when they have babies and everyone has been pleased with them.
Thanks for the chance!

When my oldest was younger he was a paci monster....taking it away was a long hard process. When we finally got it down to just at nap and night I felt relieved to have even made it that far. Then it went to night...then it went to hide it under the pillow so daddy doesnt see at night hhahhaha well then we were good at our house. Well then I find out my mother gave it to him at her house...Oh I was LIVID. She doesnt respect my wishes at all.. He is 5 now and has been binky free for a year....I am so glad my second never liked it!

My daughter was older when we took the binky away, she was 3 (I know bad). I think waiting really did help because it was amazingly easy. Leading up to Christmas we talked about how she was a big girl now and that after Christmas she was going to have to give her binky to Santa for Rudolph. I didn't want to do it Christmas Eve night, because I didn't want that night to be ruined by crying, etc. So the next night we had her put her binky under the tree and Santa was going to come back and get it. It was her "Thank You" for all the new presents he brought her. It was precious I almost cried, she put it under the tree her self and then said bye binky and we went off to bed never to be talked about again. I know it may not be as easy with the next two but I am hoping!

I will have to take the paci away in a few months and I am really hoping that it goes easily.

Neither of my girls would ever take a pacifier (interesting, because they like to make sure their baby dolls have one). My two year old sucks on her fingers, which is fine by me! It is - as our pediatrician says - her "chill mechanism."
Would love to win for my girls! 🙂

Only one of my three kids had any interest in a pacifier as a baby, and he quit his on his own at three or four months old. So while I wished when they were babies that I had that as a quick-soothe option, at least I never had to wean them off of it.
I was hoping it would mean they wouldn't grow up to be sentimental people, but my daughter is now five and is becoming a hoarder. She want's to keep every piece of paper she's ever put a crayon, pencil, sticker, or glue to.

I lost my last pacifier so he didn't have it that night. I think the fact that he shares a room with his older brother helped. A few weeks later we found it and threw it away, he didn't need it. Now with the third he kinda wants the pacifier, but I just tell him he's a big boy and pacifiers are only for babies. :o)
