My Approach to Teaching Writing

I believe parents can guide their children's writing confidently when they understand the process and why each step matters. Good homeschool writing instruction should be:

  • Clear and understandable, so you know exactly how to guide your child
  • Skill-focused, building competence gradually through repeated practice
  • Connected to reasoning and thinking, helping children see how ideas develop

This homeschool writing approach is shaped by my background as an English teacher and years in the classical homeschool community, where precise language, thoughtful instruction, and meaningful work are foundational.

What I Help With

If you've landed here, one of these might sound familiar:

  • Your child has ideas, but getting them onto the page feels hard
  • Writing lessons feel vague, frustrating, or disconnected
  • You want to teach writing well, but you're not sure what actually matters
  • You sense there's a better way to build skills - one that doesn't rely on busywork

I help homeschool parents:

  • Teach writing in a structured but flexible manner
  • Understand what skills are built by each writing activity
  • Support reluctant writers and stretch capable ones
  • Build skills gradually, through meaningful practice

My writing instruction and resources focus on late elementary and middle years, when writing expectations increase and students begin to develop their own voice.
